Claus Hamann, MD, MS, FRCPC
Principal Investigator, Project 4.

Dr. Claus Hamann received his M.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and trained in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospitals and Johns Hopkins University, and in geriatric medicine at the University of California Los Angeles and Veterans Affairs program. After directing the division of Geriatric Medicine at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT, he moved to Harvard's Division on Aging in 1991 to direct the education program for the West Roxbury Veterans Affairs Medical Centers' Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center.

He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Hamann came to Massacusetts General Hospital (MGH) Senior Health in 1995. He is the Director of Geriatric Education at MGH Senior Health and has been teaching geriatric and general medicine to residents, fellows and medical students for over 20 years.

In addition to serving on many local and national committees, he has published original articles and educational materials primarily pertaining to Geriatric Education. He has also co-authored grant proposals to enhance Geriatric training for Harvard medical students and Harvard-affiliated internal medicine residents.

Currently, Dr. Hamann precepts and coordinates ambulatory residency education in Geriatrics at MGH. In addition, he is working closely with Partners Information Systems to develop Web-linked, system-wide improvements for the care of older patients using the electronic medical record. His active interests include medication dosing for older adults, medication reconciliation, and documentation template development.
